Join us for a morning of poetry, writing and discussion centred on themes of memory, ancestral ties, language and translation. Hear from local poets, as they discuss their writing practices and speak to our current exhibitions from Wu Tsang (USA/DEU), Sancintya Mohini Simpson (QLD) and Sriwhana Spong (NZ/UK).  

Read, write or reinterpret the poems of Chinese revolutionary, feminist and poet Qiu Jin (秋瑾 1875–1907) and the calligrapher Wu Zhiying (吳芝瑛, 1867-1936), whose untold queer love story lies at the heart of American-Chinese artist Wu Tsang's film Duilian. With help from our facilitators, dedicate a poem to a female or trans ancestor, descendent or loved one. 

Event Notes

This event is open to everyone, whether or not you consider yourself a writer/poet
There will be an opportunity to write and share a poem with assistance available from our facilitators if required. 
You’re also welcome to simply listen to the conversation and read a selection of Qiu Jin’s and Wu Zhiying’s poetry
There will be an obligation-free opportunity to share your work with the group at the end.

PICA is located in the Perth Cultural Centre – also home to WA Museum, State Library of Western Australia, Art Gallery of Western Australia, The Blue Room Theatre and the State Theatre Centre of Western Australia. It is a 5 minute walk from Perth Train Station and Busport.
Alongside the gallery is the PICA Bar & Cafe where you can grab your morning coffee, lunch or evening drinks in the relaxed atmosphere of the Cultural Centre.

Public Transport
PICA is just a 5 minute walk from the Perth Train Station (take the pedestrian overpass to the Perth Cultural Centre) or the Roe Street Bus Station (enter the Perth Cultural Centre via James Street).
Transperth’s free Blue CAT buses also provide the closest pick-up and drop-off points for PICA located in Beaufort St.
Parking
The closest carparks to the Perth Cultural Centre are the State Library Carpark (entry via Francis St) or the AGWA Carpark (entry via Roe St).
ACROD car parking is available within both of these carparks.

Wheelchair bookings can be made for all PICA performances. Please book over the phone or in person at PICA so that Front of House can make note of your requirements.
